How to Root AT&T Galaxy Note! [SGH-i717][AT&T][Rogers][Telus][Bell]

So, you want to root your AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717?  (This method also works on Rogers, Telus, and Bell.)  This root method will give you root access to your Galaxy Note for Gingerbread.

UPDATE: Please USE new root method THIS IS OLD!!!
Note: For Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Unlocked/International/Asian/European, see this root method instead!!!

Step 1. Hold down Volume Down and Power button together until your phone resets.  Let go of the Power button and keep holding down Volume Down when your phone resets, you will feel a slight vibration.

Step 2. When you see the below warning screen, hit Volume Up button and you will get into Download mode.

Step 3. Connect a micro USB cable to your Galaxy Note and computer.

Step 4. Make sure you have Samsung Kies installed.  If you do, you will see “SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device” under Device Manager.  If you don’t see it, download Samsung Kies and simply run it to install (then unplug and plug the micro USB cable to your Galaxy Note.)

Step 5. Download and unzip.  You should find three files like below.

Step 8. Your Galaxy Note should reboot.

Step 9. Download Superuser app from the Market and install.

Step 10. You can verify you have root on your Galaxy Note by running a root app or updating your SU files in Superuser app.

Congratulations!  You have rooted your AT&T/Rogers/Telus/Bell Galaxy Note SGH-i717!

Pat yourself on the back and if you have any friends who have the same phone as you do, don’t forget to refer them to these instructions.

    • AlbinoRhino says:

Yes, but instead of using Odin you will use Heimdall.

      • Willie says:

I’ve tried using Heimdall, but it won’t work with Mac 10.7+ I’ve also tried using Odin wrapped in Wine, but it doesn’t recognize the USB ports. I’ve been looking tirelessly for a way to root my i717 on the latest Mac OSX and so far I’ve had no success. I wish someone would develop a proper Mac client.

    I have a boot-loop problem on a rooted Samsung Galaxy Note i717.
Here are the details of what was happen before and after rooted:

    1. I have used your method of Rooting and install ClockworkMod Recovery; every thing works well after rooted and I even did have one good backup using the ClockworkMod Recovery.
    2. Think go wrong when I installed the “Titanium Backup PRO Key ★ root” and use it to backup apps.
my setting was “backup all apps, user data, and system data >> then reboot the device”; after reboot I lost my 4G network and could not even make a phone call.
    3. So I went ahead and reset thing back to “factory setting” by:
    3a. “wipe cache partition”
    3b. “wipe data/factory reset”
    3c. “reboot system now”
    4. From here on, I just keep getting a boot-loop into “ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.7
PS. I event removed the battery and put it back still did not help.

Can you help me out of this mess.
    Thank you

  34. Dee says:

@Max. I didnt think that i would miss it so i didnt say anything sooner. but since rooting my i717 i have not been able to download anything from the PlayStore. any ideas??

  35. corey says:

Followed the whole process and now stuck on samsung screen…

  36. corey says:

    What a garbage worthless website!

    • Max says:

what did you exactly do? This root method does not erase everything, you must have followed another guide before coming here.

  37. Logun says:

To be fair, this site was setup for rooting GingerBread not ICS… you did this at your own risk. I used XDA Developers & installed without issue because that site has forums that are specific to ICS. No one made any promises here that you doing this would work (as it’s for GingerBread). Luckily you can still fix it with a bit of research & patience. Good luck.

    • Max says:

Actually this method works for Gingerbread or ICS. It does not matter if you have GB or ICS as recovery partition is separate from the system on the i717 (not GT-N7000).

  38. Logun says:

Max… Just to clear up any misconceptions for those just joining us, you didn’t delete my comments you deleted someone else’s comments due to their lack of ability to take responsibility for their own actions.

I must say Max in response to your question, I didn’t use your way as there were too many who were having issues using this site & installing ICS (I’m sure there are those same on XDA) but anyway, I installed & used clockworkmod & went that direction although I did use Odin. I had a rooted version of Gingerbread that I rooted here (I was still on Stock ROM just rooted). I’m sure your directions are fine & the how to was in your messages here but it was easier for me to find the how to’s else where as it seemed better laid out there. Thank you again for your site as it has helped me in the past. Sorry to read about the issues others are having. It does suck when it doesn’t work right. Granted most likely your phones are fixable and not “Bricked”, very few have actually “bricked” their phone for good. A little patience and some research will fix them. Just READ thru ALL the pages and how to’s 1st!

    • Max says:

Oh it was for the person who left a comment before sorry, I deleted that comment as it contained bad words. 🙂 I think I will just delete my comment too though to avoid confusion.

  39. corey says:

I just rooted my phone and when it reset its just staying at the samsung screen, ive turned it off back on same thing, did the reboot thing where u hold both volume n power butting and still nothing. what am i supposed to do??

  40. corey says:

well i was getting the stock reboot thing but didnt do anything. I just started downloading everypda.tar file and flashed the hell outta my phone n now its working. Evrry pda file i would download would only have boot img and no system img is that normal?

  41. corey says:

looks like we got more then one corey lol mine i believe was just something with my computer. Everytime i downloaded a file to root it downloaded as winrar. And it only showed boot img. But idk somehow someway i just downloaded some file that was still winrar and had a system img. Ans not a boot img and it worm lol idk what that means but i guess a little tip is as long as ur pho.e is still turninf on and goes to samsung logo just keep trying lol n btw im loving the blackstar. Easy to use and looks cool. Just change some icons and looks grwat

  42. sunny says:

  45. Jonni says:

I followed everything on here to a T except I didn’t have Kies. I still saw “Samsung device..” on my device manager. Now I am stuck on the Samsung screen and I’m not sure what to do. I’m with Bell, using ICS, I717.

  46. Jonni says:

downloaded kies, still stuck at the logo. I kind of need my phone to be working.. I haven’t used any other guides.

  47. Thiago says:

    Hi Max,

Thank you for all the great videos. I was able to root my AT&T Galaxy Note with ICS by reading the replies and following your other links. The only thing I was hoping from rooting is to remove all AT&T logos, software etc. How can I do that? How can I remove AT&T from the cellphone when it starts up? I would like to use the ICS without any cellphone company branding in it.

    • Max says:

You can use Titanium Backup app to uninstall/freeze bloatware. But be careful when you do this as it can break your system, make sure to make a backup ROM first beforehand.

Pls i need help, after following ur instructions, i discovered my device is ICS why ur method i guess is for gingerbread. Now my phone wont bootup after rooting. Pls advice me on what to do cos now am screwed..thanks

    • Max says:

This method does work on ICS or Gingerbread, do you have an i717? This root method is for AT&T Galaxy Note or Canadian variants.

        • Matt says:

Delete my comments all you want MAX but the point I’m trying to get across your thick skull is that you have TWO different .tar files, one here and one in the link you continue to say also works for ICS. Have you thought that MAYBE pda.tar doesn’t work for ICS? And would be the reason we are all BRICKING our phones? Honestly how hard would it be to change the name of the title here to “GINGERBREAD ONLY, click here for ICS method” and then put the link to your ICS page? And if you think I’m wrong, please feel free to email me a video of you using pda.tar while rooting ICS or even post said video here… This will be my last post and I’m sure it will be deleted because your “feelings” are getting hurt.

          • Max says:

Oh you know what, yeah I apologize, I thought I used the same files but they are different. Fixing it now!

          • Max says:

Sorry again, sometimes I get a ton of trolls and I swore I used the same files but I didn’t mean to be an ass, thanks again for finding this, the newer method works for both ICS/Gingerbread using Recovery. I am trying to respond to around 1000 emails so do understand I am working as fast as I can here and sometimes it gets to me as there are a lot of real trollers that will come and troll wasting my time. But again, thanks. My honest apologies.

            • Logun says:

To Max: Takes a big man to admit when he was wrong. Thanks for stepping up. Says a lot for you & your site.

Matt: Good eye & thanks for caring enough about your fellow DIY mod’ers to be persistent & help Max to see his error.

              Man hugs all around!

  53. Tikay says:

    Hi Max!
    Thanks for useful information!
BTW, is it possible to add Vietnamese language into i717? (There is Korean.)
If so, how can I do it?

  54. Philip says:

    Hi Max

Need you help, when I rooting the note, accident drop down the battery, when I plug the battery back, the screen stay on “Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select the recovery mode in Kies & try again” but I don’t have recovery code when I plug to Kies, how can I do, please help!!!

  55. alonzo says:

what the hell i did the odin thing now the screenis stuck on dowloading screen….the pc has the odin screen….but fail….and yes the other box is yellow
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
    File analysis..
    Can’t open the serial(COM) port.
All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

  56. Logun says:

Gonna have to point out the obvious here: Seems like more folks have issues attempting to make this work than those who have made it work on their Note. Maybe Matt has the right idea about stating that “this has not worked more than it has worked. Try at your own risk for the ICS update.” I would think then you’d (Max) get less angry posts about folks phones not working… that or either people need to read down further and discover all the other folks that have had issues with the ICS setup. Just sayin. Other than that Max, you’re doing a great job.

  57. Martin says:

So… this is only for Gingerbread right? I didn’t read all the comments but that’s what Matt’s comments at the end seem to imply.

Is this safe to use on stock ICS Galaxy Note’s then?
Or is there a ICS specific method out there that I should use instead
I do not want to brick my phone…

    Hi Max,
Someone advised to use Galaxy SGH-i717 rooting method to root Galaxy Note LTE GT-N7005. So after that, should I flash GT-N7005 with SGH-i717 ROMs or GT-N7000 ROMs?

  62. Eric Barnes says:

I have the SGH-i717M with Bell.
I followed everything step by step but when I tried using titanium it says my phone wasn’t rooted. But when I try updating my phone it says I can’t update it because has been screwed with.
When I initially set it up I factory reset my phone to version 4.1.2 then ran it. I think that is maybe why.

    Please Help
