C-ROM + Forest Kernel for Galaxy Note GT-N7000!

For this week’s Galaxy Note GT-N7000 ROM of the Week, check out C-ROM along with Forest kernel.

Based on latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat, C-ROM brings you a high-level of customization along with the latest Google Camera.  I also found that performance is greatly improved when you use Forest kernel along with it.

C-ROM is a new breed on the custom ROM market today and what’s really hot “right now”.  You will find many of the custom AOSP features you are used to such as customizing your status bar, interface, and UI.  And also C-ROM includes goodies like PIE Control, HALO, Appbar, Gesture Anywhere, OmniSwitch, Active Display, custom animations, LCD Density, and more.

My favorite feature on the ROM itself is the “On-The-Go Mode”.  Turn this feature on in Settings->C-Tool->Interface and you will be able to toggle it in your Power Menu.   Upon turning on, your home screen will turn transparent with your back camera replaced as background.  What is this for?  It’s great when you are on-the-go in the streets while using your Note so you don’t run into others while fully focusing on your job at hand.  I’ve seen plenty of times where people are walking the street almost killing themselves watching their phones.  This won’t prevent that completely but it will definitely help for those of you who commute to work everyday or live in busy urban cities like New York City.

As for Forest kernel, it vastly improves performance on the ROM itself and gets rid of any lag whatsoever.  You do not need to change any CPU settings for this to work, just install the kernel after installing the ROM.  There’s currently no overclocking on the kernel itself but the developer of the kernel is adding overclocking soon, I should have an update by next ROM of the Week.

Overall, C-ROM is definitely one of the best KitKat AOSP ROMs out there so definitely give it a twhirl this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

i was wondering if i could use the minimal version of Gapps with this? I currently have sa micro modular package (~86mb) which is roughly 200mb less than what youre recommending, however it is also outdate (20140321 version) would there be any issues that would arise from it?

also, you didnt mention anything about the battery life, is it the same for all kitkat platforms or is this worse/better than other kitkat roms? and does the 3g/HSDPA work in this version? (coming from Biftor SlimKat rom, works pretty good aside from sudden FC’s, reboots, battery charging issues, 3g/HSDPA not working, and is unrootable.)

  2. Niq says:

Oh wow! thanks for the super fast reply! i actually got around to download the full gapps module you posted (i thought the download was going to take longer but my speeds were surprisngly fast today so i just went ahead and downloaded the whole thing! haha) installing the rom now, will let you know my reviews after a few hours.

    thanks again max!

  3. Wyle says:

Well first make sure that you are on jelly bean 4.1.2 and then download philz kernel and download the kernel with respect to your modem, put it into your sd card. boot into recovery by powering down and hold home+volume up and power button and release power button when note logo appears and then install the kernel via recovery. Don’t expect to be spoonfed :3 Use google 🙂

  13. Sun Lang says:

I just update to C+ROOM kernel and then I can’t send and receive message. Can you help me what wrong?

  14. Colin says:

Just tried out the c-rom on my n7000 you put up on you tube, you say in your write up about the battery life is improved using the forest kernel, but, I have found it to be very power hungry and had used nearly 40%of my battery in about three hours with hardly any screen on time. Great rom but bad battery life. I may go back to the carbon room nightlies as they were kinder to my battery

  15. Jade says:

    thanks max for this ROM,
i am using it for the past 6 days.
here are some of my comments.

    1 its fast.
    2 but not so stable
    3 battery life not good.
4 some apps find it difficult to load,

so far the best costom rom i used on my n7000 is Rocketrom v11.
it gave the best battery life ever.
i would be glade to about other roms with that long battery life and stability.

  16. sama says:

installed ROM successfully. but my note is now very much slow??? have i missed sonething??

  17. kartik arora says:

i am not able to make a call it says mobile network not available but the 3g is working and i am able to download apps from play store

  18. Kris says:

Hi to all that are High on Android!
Really like the ROM, not had any issues with battery life at all, if anything its been a massive improvement on the carbon, sweet and ultimate roms. I find it to be a very smooth rom too.
I do have a couple of small issues that i think could be easily rectified:

    1. Mobile Broadcast notification in status bar, despite disabling them all from the settings, i still have the phone vibrate at me, nothing in status bar untill i drag it down and see the ‘megaphone’ symbol with the broadcasts??? not a massive problem just a little bit pain in the butt!

    2. I installed the rom with the latest CWM after doing all necessary wipes, installed GApps (also with CWM) and once setup i got the OTA updates for both the ROM and GApps. So i accepted them both but after installing them, the OTA tells me GApps is available and that i currently have version 0.0? which i find strange as play store and other google apps are installed and working (although the unused ones are removed via RootUninstaller, not sure if this could be the cause for OTA to inform me of update?)

    Thanks in advance Maximus! 😉

  19. Raffy says:

OMMMGGG.. i just installed the Android Kit Kat by following your instruction..this is the first time i do Rooting as well and everything went well.. Thanks for all of your thorough instructions. Credits to the one behind this.. Thanksss a lottt…..

  20. wenx says:

First time root and flash the ROM into my galaxy note-1 successful. Now my note work faster but battery life not good. Not stable, reboot it self and intermittent touch screen no function with finger and need to used style pen for operation. Anyway thanks for the ROM.

    • Raffy says:

have you tried rooting your phone using the correct PhilZ CW6 xxxxx (baseband version) corresponding your phone? I did that way for me though it took me long time to search for the matched zip file for my phone. And prior to installing the C-Rom Kitkat make sure that the version of you Clockwork recovery is version v6.0.4.3 or higher because that’s the compatible version for C-rom kitkat. I successfully upgraded mine from JB 4.1.2 to Android 4.4.2.

  21. Sujith says:

Fantastic ROM (as of now 😛 lets see how it behaves next few days)

Thanks Max for Forest Kernel idea. I can see it really impacts. The experience is really smooth. Too early to comment on Battery life.

Used the n7000 KK compatible CWM recovery you had provided in the instructions ~ took a backup ~ wipe data factory reset ~ Wipe dalvik ~ Wipe cache ~ Format system, preload, data (though preload format resulted in an error) ~ flashed the rom ~ flashed Gaaps ~ flashed kernel

Select Keyboard layout notification keeps coming after every reboot. apart from that not seen any issues till now

To sum up, looks like a awesom rom, only once FC on trying to use Face Unlock.

  22. Yashas Panjabi says:

This ROM is great. I’m loving the customization options, and the whole UI is just great. I did encounter a couple of problems, though. Firstly, whenever I get a call, the screen remains blank and I am not able to answer the call unless I press the home or power button a few times, which doesn’t always work. Secondly, sometimes if after locking the phone I want to unlock it again immediately, the screen doesn’t turn on. I have to then wait for a bit and then turn it back on. Please somebody provide me with a fix if you can.

  23. Alejandro says:

I have problems with Netflix. When I launch the app the first screen appears and then a message that the app was stopped! Any ideas to fix the problem? Thanks

  24. Dhurva says:

    Installed this Rom yesterday .

NOTE : The download link is not the updated version . You will GET UPDATE as soon you install from above link. Better search for updated one .

    There’s no nova launcher

    Current one is –
    C-Rom V – KK-v6.6-20140521

Came from SLIM Bean Rom . Installed using TWRP (they are fine with 4.4 Roms) .
Installed the Slim Bean Gapps just to check the Rom . Later installed the suggested one .

A bit of lag i noticed in the starting version and app crashing .

    Later after update –
No lag nothing . No overheating . Stable . No crashing .
Battery life may be slightly better then Slim Rom , Almost same 🙂 But better
Tons of additional features . as stated in the video .
No sudden reboots or anything .
Dark theme feature available just like Slim Rom .

    Loving it right now 😀

  25. Adam says:

Does this ROM have PA hybrid properties, phablet mode in particular?

  26. mahyhim says:

I tried installing the c-rom and it gives me Error Status 7. I tried a few times and it still hv the same problem. I even redownload the c rom for a few times. I followed exactly what you said by upgrading the cwm to latest version.

    Pls anyone out there, HELP.

  27. Manoj says:

After the second Update (V7.0) of the ROM, the battery hardly charges and drains out so quick that even a fully charged mobile would be battery dead in just 3-4 hours.

v7.0 is not gud at all… v.6.5 update is the best of C-ROM. thanks.

    • sujith says:

Manoj did you do a clean install ? I mean full wipe format….that’s what the XDA thread and the developer suggests

  28. Rinkesh says:

after installing forest kernel it stucks at c-rom boot image before installling forest kernel it was starting properly…

    • sujith says:

Which version ROM did you install?… I got a boot loop on v7.0…can you confirm if you used kernel V2 on ROM v7.0?….I was planning to use this combo.

MAX, it seems forest kernel does not work with C ROM v7.0… Can you confirm?

  29. varoon mehra says:

i have tried this rom works perfectly, although little laggy initially.but after each reboot my fone hangs up. have tried cleaning dalvik catche n cache partition.still had to reinstall the rom twice.anu solutions?

  30. Johnny Karlsson says:

Great Rom. Found one thing that does not work.
My ISP Provider cant send CP message for configure the phone. found out that the APNs setting MCC default to 472 and MNC to 01 . My provider is sending MCC=423 and MNC=03 . try to changed manually then when saving configuration is gone even if i let it be as it was first save then going in and change to these number then it disappear.

  31. krissy says:

After using this rom for a few months with a few random reboots and messaging app crashing. i decided to a full data wipe, cache wipe and dalvik wipe before a full re-install of rom, kernel and gapps. once up and running after removing a few apps the screen went black, the pull down status bar was fine so i turned off the phone and since then i have not been able to get it back on, after allowing the c-rom boot animation to run for almost 10 mins i decided to use odin 3.09 to flash an old kernel (philz_touch_6.12.8-n7000.tar.md5) as the newer ones gave me a binary error. between the nand write start sticking or getting the failed message, i cannot get my gt n7000 back on. it continues to the c-rom animation and i can only access the download mode, there is no recovery? i would really appreciate some help

    • Max says:

Try updating to latest C-ROM here, http://get.c-rom.org/n7000/

Latest version is way more stable. Also what is binary error?

      • Kris Gorman says:

I have tried downloading philz most recent kernel direct from his dl page but when i load any one other than the 6.12 i get a “binary error” when loading the md5 for pda in odin. With the kernel version that does work (or did) now freezes on ‘Nand write start’ or the ‘set up connection’. If you cant post me a link for most recent md5 kernel i would appreciate it as obviously i am not gettin the correct one. Also should mention i have tried both 3.07 and 3.09 odin, which would you suggest is better (or more suited to the phone if that causes the issue). Appreciate the help dude, stuck using an old wildfire s which is not good 😀

        • Kris Gorman says:

Ooops half asleep and just noticed you did attach a link 😛 will give it a go this afternoon but again which odin version would you suggest. TIA dude

          • sunny says:

i hate odin cos it bricks alot of my samsung. i used a more better and easy way without pc now my cwm is version 6.0.45

      • krissy says:

Ok so i downloaded the new c-rom versions from the link you posted and still getting the error from odin “md5 error! binary is invalid” and thats before i have even connected the phone, tried putting phone in then loading it to receive the same msg

        • Max says:

Oh, do you know how to install custom ROMs? You cannot use ODIN, please read FAQ first!

          • Kris Gorman says:

Yes i know how to install roms, but when a rom goes buggy and doesnt allow me access to cwm then please enlighten me as im pretty sure all this info was covered in my first question. I managed to get a stock rom to install (kind of) but its doing what c rom did and stays on boot animation ( samsung with the blue and purple oval logo)

            • Max says:

You still should be able to, use Vup, center home, and power for 5 seconds, let go of power button but keep holding down rest.

There are times when it doesn’t work, like 1 out of 1000, it happened to me once, you can just install any kernel with CWM in that case with ODIN and install new ROM.

              • krissy says:

Finally! Eventually found a philz cwm that worked and now running c-rom 4.4.4 and I must say so far I like. Thanks again for the help Max, I think my patience was wearing thin and not trying to access recovery enough. Almost 8hrs {not consecutively of course) of searching, downloading and flashing eventually paid off

  32. Peter says:

Hi is this applicable for famaroot users? cuz im using famaroot so yeah im afraid i might get boot loop/

  33. Sunny says:

My too was saying that but I finally learned what went wrong. 1. Make sure u are using a good memory card or just look for a good 2gb sd card. Insert it on ur phone. Boot ur phone to clockworkmod then format and partion the memory card right there. Then shut down ur phone and remove the sd card. Copy the rom on the sd card from ur pc. Then insert back on ur phone. Boot back to cwm and flash the rom. That’s what I did n it worked fine.

  34. mick says:

Hi. Just installed the rom. I acnt seem to connect to my hsdpa network. I got 3g set up but it stays at edge connection. Qhat happened? Aside from that everything is fine great rom. Please help me out with the data connection.

  35. maveric says:

i have installed C-RoM-KK-v7.1-20140623-n7000 slim kat 4.4.4 with GAPPS 4.4.3..
can i install forest rom on top of it and what order i should install

    • Joar says:

I am wondering this as well. I have the C-Rom V 7.1, and I have tried the Forest Kernel V5, but the phone is just boot looping and nothing happens. I shall test the V4 of the Forest kernel and see if that works.

  36. Koh says:

Hi,i would like to change the boot animation to original samsung boot animation. Is there any way u can help me?
