So, you’ve rooted your Galaxy Note and installed ClockworkMod Recovery.

What’s next?

Well, before you begin modding your newly rooted Galaxy Note and installing a bunch of new ROMs, I highly recommend you to make at least one backup of your rooted stock ROM.

Things can always go wrong but by having a backup ROM, you can always restore back to it no matter what.

Besides that, you can learn to backup/restore ROMs on the go with multiple ROMs using ClockworkMod Recovery. This will allow you to change ROMs without losing your personal settings, apps, and etc…etc…

Before we begin, you will need a rooted Galaxy Note and have ClockworkMod Recovery installed.

Step 1. Hold down the Volume Up, Center Home, and Power button together until your rooted Galaxy Note resets.

Step 2. Let go of the Power button when you see the Samsung Galaxy Note splash screen as shown below.

Step 3. Once in ClockworkMod Recovery, choose “backup and restore”.

*Note – You can use Volume buttons to select and Power button to choose in ClockworkMod Recovery.

Step 4. Choose “backup”.  This will backup your current ROM.  It should take about 5 minutes.  If you are just making a backup of your ROM, you can stop here.  For restoring ROMs, go to the next step.

Step 5. To restore a ROM choose “backup and restore” from the main menu.

Step 6. Choose “restore”.

Step 7. Choose the backup folder you want to restore.  Here, I am restoring my stock rooted ROM as you can note by the folder name with “stock” at the end.  You can always rename your backup folders (in /clockworkmod/backup directory) to something more memorable using an app like ES File Explorer).

Step 8. Choose “Yes” to restore.  Remember, restoration process completely delete whatever ROM you had before!

Step 9. When restore is done, simply reboot.

Step 10. Your Galaxy Note should be restored now.

        Hi Max,

Restored my old ROM from the Kingdroid ICS I had installed.(Mainly cos I want to hv my Polaris office back) but Note till stays stuck on start screen. Is there a solution?

        • Max says:

Hmmm weird, try restoring with Abyss kernel then. Install Abyss kernel, reboot into recovery from advanced menu then restore.

  13. Jay says:

i did comment this on another post but felt like it belonged here so here is my problem i flashed and installed RocketROM and it worked fine but didnt like the looks with soo much green on it. Now i tried to go back to stock by going on to CWM>back up and restore>restore>and selected the image which is the only backup there is before i installed this ROM.. then it told me it failed… Now it just at ‘Installing update…’ When i flash Abyss Kernal. I can get into CWM fine flash franco kernal fine (which is the only thing that works but anything else it doesnt do anything :/ what can i do??

    • Max says:

did you try flashing Abyss kernel the restore ROM in CWM?

      • Jay says:

i try to flash Abyss kernal and as i do it sticks at ‘Installing update…’ for well over 10 minutes, I’m currently doing it right and now its the same. 🙁

        • Max says:

Weird, try redownloading it and re-install.

          • Jay says:

i done it! installed stock ROM through Odin and done a factory reset, its like i have a brand new Galaxy Note! if anyone else is having the same problem try the Unroot Method as i did and folloed the instructions very carefully! 🙂

            Q. i have a feeling that CWM couldn’t find the stock ROM (which is what i believe to be is why i couldn’t restore back into it) nothing would work unless i still had it in the system? would this be the case or could it be something else?

can i restore to my stock gb rooted rom from custom ics rom?

    • opiujn says:

Yes, install Abyss 4.2 in cwm-r and reboot recovery (reboot recovery after Abyss 4.2 is important!). Then wipe and restore your stock backup. =)

  22. Joseph Karman says:

Just to add a few comments here. Backkup your ROM to your external card, not your internal card, because I have experienced that you may accidentally wipe phone memory like me (woops). If you get an error during the back, that just means you don’t have enough space.

Also a note too backup your contacts and evrything you want because Samsung kies doesn’t like custom ROMs and will not reconnct no matter what you do. If your stuck like I was having 2000 contacts on outlook and found no way to get it on to your phone, that took me some reaserch being that I had to get a wonderful programthat I downloaded for free that syncs real time to your phone called “One Meda Hub” which you have to download a version on your PC and the other (an APP) on your Android.

Important: Backup your APN settings. This is responsible for your little word that say 3G / 4G for all the users out their. The ROM’s I found is not gurantee to have the correct APN settings for your provider, therefore you will experience you an call out and end text but can’t surf the web. If you happen not to back this up just google APN settings. I have posted a work APN setting on this website for FIDO only and made some comments on that.

Please unlock your phone to be on the safe said prior to flashing your ROM, and this clockworkMOD is a beautiful program and it is a must to help prevent bricking.

Just a NOTE, tried all the ROMs and I perfer Objection. The real test is to turn your camera on (for i717). I found that with Only one it crashes alot and in my opinion, well I am not a fan of crashing alot. I tried this version that took forever to boot up, that had all the S3 features on a i717 and didn’t really like that. It even said S3 during bootup. Just a note: T-mobile modem, don’t flash this on the Rogers i717. It is not the same and will stop registering your sim.

Thanks guys, love this site, a realible source.

  28. opiujn says:

    Hi everyone! =)
I’m dual-booting and wonder if someone have some experience in how to backup the secondary rom that is on the int.SD? Is there anyway to create a fully functional nandroid backup from it so I can back it up and then restore as primary rom instead later on and use it even if I remove the dual boot kernel? Or is there a safe way to overwrite the primary rom on phone memory with secondary one manually? Not in a rush to do that, but thought that if the secondary (SDrom) one day turn out to be better than the primary and one have spent hours tweaking settings, it would be great to know how to switch without starting over with a fresh rom installation.

    Hello Guys,

I did some experiments with JB roms and went back to my backup of tooted ISC rom.
After I managed to restore backup I have realized that I restored old backup so I wanted to do restore again using more recent backup.
I used same procedure as during flashing so installed CWM then abyss kernel and restore of most recent ISC backup.
Back up stared in standard way but most likely never went through whole process cause few minutes later I’ve realized that screen is off.
Now I can not do anything since , phone is not waking up at all.
Do you have some advise what can help?

    Thanks in advance.
