For this week’s AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717 ROM of the week, check out uXylon ROM based on Android 4.2.2 AOSP (What is AOSP?).

uXylon ROM is a custom Android 4.2.2 ROM with features from various different ROMs like AOKP and ParanoidAndroid while adding its own recipe of extra features.

First, uXylon ROM featuers uTool Settings (very similar to AOKP ROM Control, see AOKP ROM Control tutorial first if you are new to all this), TWO PIE Controls, its own Hybrid Settings, and even latest HALO floating notifications like ParanoidAndroid ROMs.

What I really like about uXylon ROM is that it’s not exactly identical to other ROMs like PACMan ROM but does its own thing by adding their own favorite features. What you end up is a nice hybrid ROM with a great mix of features from other AOSP ROMs plus more.

As a side note, the ROM itself did appear a bit laggy at first but after enabling “Force GPU rendering” and changed all animations scales to “.5x”, it seems to fly! Also I did install Uber kernel which allows for overclocking up to 1.83Ghz.

For camera, uXylon ROM ships with Android 4.2 camera without PhotoSphere, but you can easily fix that by installing the new Android 4.3 camera APK.

If you are looking for a fresh, new AOSP ROM to try out, definitely give uXylon ROM a try this week(end) and do let me know on the results!

Download uXylon ROM for AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717 (You can also install on Rogers SGH-i717R)

Download UBER Kernel (You can also install this on any other Android 4.2.2 AOSP ROM btw)

Download Gapps

To install, reboot into recovery, make a backup ROM (if you haven’t yet), wipe data/factory reset (unless coming from uXylon ROM), install ROM, install Gapps, and reboot.

Also you can easily install Android 4.3 Photosphere camera!

I am unable to install any ROM beyond 4.1.1. All 4.2.2 will not install. It keeps saying “No MD5 File Found”…
    Plz Help ….

    • developweb says:

Are you using a rooted phone with latest TWRP or CWM recovery? I just ignore the MD5 warning in TWRP and flash away. uXYLON is my new favourite 4.2.2 ROM.

      • Hydra6605 says:

I am using TWRP V2.4.4.0 It keeps failing to install, because of “no MD5 file found”. Although when i try to install Roms that are before 4.2.2 it still works despite it saying no MD5 file found.

    • Chase Melancon says:

I had that problem once and what i did was re downloaded the ZIP file and maybe it was a coincidence but it worked after that. Good Luck

  2. Robert says:

ok everything runs smooth but some reasons it dosent have any APNs profiles and , when i try to make one it just dosent want to same them.my phone dosent have any service. please help. anybody had the same thing.?!

    • john says:

the only thing i can help you is you can try googling ucmd3 modem ,download and flash it hopefully that should restore your signal service. hope that helps!

  3. john says:

hey there, fast rom but it force closes twice and is there a setting where i can put more apps on my screen instead of the small 4×4? thanks.

  4. Raffi says:

Had this installed for a day now. So far so good. Very very fast. Looks and functions great. Absolutely no problems… thus far.

  5. craszh says:

    hi max,

do you know if the phone can program to use wifi when receive mms instead of celluar data? i am at work and signal is slow only receive edge inside building. i do have wifi at work, but when i do receive mms it using celluar data to pull the picture or video instead of wifi. do you know any fix for this or there is none? Thanks

  6. MrMaji says:

Great ROM! After failure to install the PACMan ROM this one is SWEET! I will be using this one for a while. Now I am going to install the new camera.

  7. David Bratton says:

Great ROM so far. Switched from Padawan JB ROM v2 which I liked as well. I did notice though the bluetooth did not work and went to developers site and downloaded a newer version and installed the GAPs he had. My bluetooth now works. I have made the tweaks you suggested and overclocked. It defaulted to Interactive but trying SmartAss2 right now. Only issue I have had so far is phone rebooted twice, but that has been over 3 day period.

    • David Bratton says:

Forgot to mention, I also updated the uber kernal. There is a newer version of that one to.

    • David Bratton says:

Last response. For some reason when I go to install the new camera, it gives me error. Gallery at top and X App not installed. Anyone have workaround?

  8. Raffi says:

Silly question, but is there a way to disable the feature which has the home button wake the phone from sleep mode?

I’ve had too many occasions where it is taken out of sleep mode, in my pocket, and gone into emergency dial.

    • David Bratton says:

Tools / uTool / Lockscreen / untick either Home unlock or Menu unlock. Forgot which I unticked, but both are unticked on mine now. I put Note in front pocket and screen was always on draining battery.

      • Gary Yun says:

Setting –> Display –> disable “Home Button”

        • Gary Yun says:

It is always better to use software key to wake up screen rather hardware key(Power Button) which will make life span shorter. May consider to put casing with cover to avoid screen wake up inside pocket.

  9. Nim Divino says:

I’m loving this ROM. Thanks so much for reviewing it. This is the only website I go to when I get bored with my installed ROMS. I installed LMT launcher instead of using the slim pie.

Question though, I noticed that my hardware key lights blink when there are notifications. Do you know how to turn it off so there’s no blinking?

    • Max says:

There is setting somewhere in settings, look for “notifications”, you should be able to turn it off.

    • craszh says:

      Hi Nim,
Did you find the setting on how to turn off the notification light? Can’t seem to find it in setting.

      • Nim Divino says:

        Hey Craszh,
I cannot find the settings to completely turn the lights off. I did find the LED under uTool > LED and set the LED on to 0 seconds and LED off in 10 seconds. Atleast its a slow blink.

Still looking for the correct setting and if anybody knows, please chime in.

  10. craszh says:

This is the first JB 4.2.2 I actually like other ones my phone seem to have issue with it, but this one is smooth and faster overclock with Trickster Mod to 1782 so far so good. Installed the latest version from XDA and the kernel suggested by Max. Also installed Trickster Mod no issue so far going into 3 days hope it stays that way. Now just automate phone with Tasker with Autovoice.
    Awesome Max thanks.

  11. Hydra6605 says:

Well I finally got the ROM installed, but now the Bluetooth stopped working. Any one else have the same issue and any solution…? Plz help.

    • David Bratton says:

Go to developers website and download the newer version. I have gone back to padawon jb 2, which is thw most stable for me with overclocking. This one caused my phone to reboot to frequently.

  12. canadiansdontsayaboot says:

Reboots a lot when connected to USB. Lots of setting very fast. Wish this distro and kangdroid joined forces you’d have something awesome.

  13. craszh says:

why every time i click on launch tools under developer optioins it crashes? anyone else have this issue? couldn’t this because i’ve installed trickster mod?

  14. craszh says:

Dang my phone reboot twice already today when trying to check text messages. Anyone else have this problem?

  15. craszh says:

suck on the boot up logo pulled the battery couple time still no go. boot to TWRP and do a restore, hope it won’t give me a problem anymore.

  16. Teseract says:

This ROM is so much faster than the JB release of Padwan it’s ridiculous. Way less bloat as well. Plus it has no “battery charged, unplug charger” notification that has caused me so much grief. I dock my phone at night and the $#@$ phone actually turning the screen on full blast to wake me up and tell me to unplug the charger made me want to throttle whatever bonehead engineer decided to include it without an option to turn it off. Plus Padwan went through long periods where it was so slow after being turned on that I’d not be able to answer incoming calls until the 4th ring in some cases. No such problems here.

  17. craszh says:

Crap, after about a week of use it started to give me problem. First 4-5 was good than rebooted itself yesterday 7/24 after trying to read text message rebooted twice. Third reboot got stuck on boot up logo had to re-installed it again, because forgot to do backup. Ever since yesterday my phone reboot about 11 times already since yesterday after re-installed this ROM. Other then that the ROM is fast and I like it. This time I didn’t install the Trickster Mod app hoping this is what caused the reboot the first time, but nope this app had nothing to do with it. Now it reboot way too many time and I am too lazy to go back to Padawan JB v2 and too lazy to input everything all over again. l guess I’ll just wait for new ROM to come out.

  18. Nico says:

I have been using this rom for about a week now. It would be amazing, but it force reboots way too many times a day and it lags at times. I do like the extra features and when it runs at its best, its amazing, but the force shutdowns and battery drainage of this rom and pacman are making me just revert back to CM10.1 Nightlies. CM didnt have the feature that PACman or Ux has, but i had way less shutdowns and force closes and the batter use was great. any words on how to solve these issues. If i can find some fixes, i would def stay with these.

  19. Teseract says:

I’ve not had mine reboot spontaneously since I installed it, but I’m running the July 17th release with the Uber Kernel 2.3. Maybe the people with the reboot issues should try Uber?

  20. Teseract says:

Well crap, as soon as I posted the above the damn thing reboots. WTF?

  21. Gary Yun says:

I’m now using this uXylon ROM with GT-N7005. So far so good except it sometimes reboots itself. I use Nova launcher instead of TouchWiz which might cause “Display” disabled inside “Setting”

    • Gary Yun says:

After several reboots, Display is back to normal.

      • Gary Yun says:

This ROM is fast & good!
OC to 1.836GHz & Chinese support.
Navigation Bar customizes 14 commends at the desktop bottom.
        Various setting for Status Bar.
Quick Toggles customizes 23 system commends.
        But no Samsung Multi-Windows support!

  22. Bee says:

The status bar (at the top of the screen) is completely transparent and flashes when I go from my home screen to my apps and back, and the Halo icon is missing so I can’t turn it on. I’ve tried almost everything! I’ve downloaded and re-downloaded different versions of this ROM and I’m still getting the same problem over and over again. I have no idea as to what is causing and I don’t know how to fix it. Can anyone help?

    • Bee says:

Also, when I scroll to both edges of my home screen, there’s a big, black vertical bar on the side, like there wasn’t enough wallpaper to cover it up. Still trying to find a solution.

  23. CravinR1 says:

This ROM is infinitely superior to the junk Padawan has put out. Loving this ROM on my i717.

  24. eddie says:

what 4G baseband version with this rom? anyone know where to get 4g baseband for this rom? thanks so much..

  25. Jeff says:

my phone keeps shutting off and then coming back on again, does anyone have any solutions to this issue please?

  26. Wil says:

Is there a way to get a pop up dialogue when an app crashes instead of waiting 10 minutes or rebooting the phone? On padawan, a pop up would show up if an app crashed letting you know that an app crashed and you could wait or let the app die. This ROM doesn’t seem to do that at all. When I have a crash it just locks up the whole phone and I have to force reboot it. Any help would be appreciated.

  27. Joseph says:

I can’t install apk files on this new rom. Anybody have any ideas?

  28. jae says:

After rom is installed, it doesn’t turn on the display. Just blinking logos. I need your help.

  29. ezfreeze says:

I just installed this as my first rom… Everything went great…

I updated CWM following this link to the latest version:
Did a backup, factory reset, wiped cache, dalvik wipe, installed rom, installed kernel, installed gapps

Came up on the first try…

    5 star from me

  30. Wil says:

Here is why I uninstalled this ROM:
Bluetooth sometimes requires a reboot of phone to work.
Daddy was a thief (game) doesn’t work.
Flashlight doesn’t work on “power widget” in notification shade but does on the tile shade. (Weird)
Status bar takes a long time to start when rebooting phone . I lost the status bar the first time I installed this ROM and it never came back so I re-flashed everything and restarted the next day.
The alarm clock sucks: no pre-alarm.(unlike Padawan JB V2)
Fast charge doesn’t work, cant be enabled.
    Back to Padawan JB V2.

  31. Joseph says:

I cannot install the camera apk. Help. Please.

  32. Otto says:

I want to use T-Mobile firmware in an AT&T galaxy note SGH-i717 it is possible?
