How To Unroot to ICS 4.0.4 on Galaxy Note GT-N7000!

Click on Play button above or Click Here to Download High-Quality HD video to your Smartphone or Computer.

For those of you who want to try out the latest ICS 4.0.4 on your Galaxy Note GT-N7000 that just came out, you can use Mobile Odin to do it easily.  This new version has some upgrades like floating video player from Galaxy S3 and the new Galaxy Note apps.  We’ve already seen most of it with custom ROMs but if you really want to try, here’s how to do it.

Make sure before you begin, you make a backup of your ROM, backup your apps using Titanium Backup app, and also hide your wife and kids.

Step 1. First, you will need to download a 3 files, Mobile Odin Lite, Mobile Odin Flash Kernel for GT-N7000, and the stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM.

Also, if you want to help the creator of Mobile Odin ChainFire, you can simply buy the Mobile Odin Pro version on the Play Store (then you only need to download the stock ICS ROM).

*If you are unrooting your phone for warranty, you can also download Triangle Away app (also available on Play Store) and run it just before unrooting to reset the binary counter.
Download Triangle Away app here

Step 2. Unzip any zip files and you should get the 3 files like shown below.  Copy all of these 3 files to your phone.
(Don’t have unzipping program? Download and install 7Zip first.)

Step 3. Use a file explorer app like ES File Explorer and find the files you copied over.  Select on any files ending in .apk and install them.  In other words, install Mobile Odin Lite and Mobile Odin Flash Kernel for GT-N7000.

Step 4. When done installing the apps, run Mobile ODIN Lite and select “Open file…”.

Step 5. Find the stock ROM file you copied over, it’s the file ending in tar.md5.

Step 6. Select “OK”.

Step 7. Select “Flash firmware”.

Step 8. Select “Continue”.

Step 9. Select “Check”.

Step 10. Mobile Odin will start flashing the stock ROM on your phone so just let it do its thing but keep watching carefully just in case.

Once it’s done, your phone should reboot and you should now have Android ICS 4.0.4 running on your phone.

If you have any problems after unrooting, see How to Do a Factory Reset on Stock Galaxy Note GT-N7000.

  1. David says:

    max,
can i use this method to flash my Note back to 4.0.4 stock ROM?
    I’m on Criskelo v8 now.

    thanks.

  2. George says:

I just installed German 4.0.4, but have some issues:
    1. Screen is not locking (no one locking method does not works)
    2. Can’t activate remote controls to use samsung drive
    3. default video player does not plays any videos at all
First time, when I flashed (safe way, did factory wipe/reset/format/clear cache from abyss kernel, flashed with PC Odin)
samsung keyboard didn’t worked, it was writing “null” for any letter
Second time it worked, but have this issues

also, when I press power button, only two choices are: TurnOff od Reboot (as it was on GB ROM’s)

Max, is it safe to re-flash this kernel using Mobile Odin? during flash does it performs any wipes? Because still unknown if this kernel has eMMC brick bug

  3. Kris says:

Will this method work on the i717 as well

  4. Jay says:

Hey bro I’m using the AT&T note on my tmobile how do I get this official ICS 4?? Phone is rooted (Followed your rooting instructions)

  5. Nitin says:

Hi bro, My i717 is running only one ICS rom…I tried going back to stock 2.3.6 in order to update to the official 4.0.4 however I couldn’t update through KIES as it said the “phone is not supported for upgrade through KIES”….after bit of a research I did figure out tht in order to update the Baseband version shud be i717UCLA1 but mine is still i717UCLE2 (which i guess is coming from the only one ROM) even after going back to 2.3.6…

Please help me where i m making a mistake and how can i upgrade officialy

    thanks

  6. frizey says:

Hi Max, thanks as always for your site. I see from comment above there is no need to run abyss first, so does that mean i can just install the files right over the top of the lastest Criskelo u posted about? PS I’ve rooted and installed criskelo using your instructions.

  8. Simon says:

Max! you are a legend for putting this up bro! Thanks so much! praying for your youtube channels justice dude! PEACE

  9. Simon says:

Just one more thing Max, the Pro Mobile Odin version lets you keep root (EverRoot) while flashing to the new stock rom as opposed to the Odin Lite one right? Just want to clarify. Thanks a lot.

    • Max says:

I heard EverRoot isn’t recommended while unrooting but you can try it, I have not tried that option.

      • Simon says:

        Hey Max,

I bought Mobile Odin, and flashed the firmware with EverRoot, and all is well. Nothing changed at all, and root is still in place. Thought I let you know!

  10. tuanbri says:

    really appreciate your work here.

I have tried to reinstall the ics via odin but still it can not access the E:\ drive. So my note is not booting. Please what can i do? I can not find a solution anywhere on the net. Please heeeeeeeellllllp…. Thank You.

After night, everything works, maybe time was needed to write cache and atc.
no issues except, I still can not use samsung drive services, maybe they are not supported in my country?
(but i bought my note, with joint promotion Samsung and my carrier)

  14. Christian says:

    Hallo Max,

thank you so much for your work.
First I rooted my Note with Abyss Kernel with the help of your instructions.
Now I installed ICS 4.0.4 and it worked like a charm.
Even the ADW Launcher, which lagged a little under Gingerbread, seems to run smoother.

Will you provide instructions on how to root this ICS version?

    Thank you very much

    Christian

  15. Jason Indiongco says:

    Hi Sir Max,

Would like to ask if we can flash this ROM using PC odin?

please advise, as my note is now not booting after this.. would like to try loading ROM using PC odin instead..

    Thanks and more power!

    • it happened to me, but is a waste of time to reflash with pc odin once u flashed with mobile one, it is 100% success if you can see the Samsung logo, now restart in recovery and do a wipe factory and you are done, you were coming from a custom rooted room for sure. Same happened with me. I was coming from blackCNA JB.

  16. khai says:

Hi Max, I got into a trouble, I did just according to your guide, but at the start up, the “SAMSUNG” logo just shows, but nothing further….I was on CM9 before I do this. I tried installing other roms, the same thing happened..please help…Thanks for your effort.

  17. Jose Toro says:

    Hi Max.
My update does not come. I live in Venezuela
    My GT-N7000
    Kernel 2.6.35.7-N7000ZSKK1-CL706440
    Compilation Number GINGERBREAD.UBKK2
    Version 2.3.6 android
    With Root and CWM installed.
I can upgrade to 4.0.4 ICS following this (his) information?.
I’m very new at this and I have fear.
    Thank

    • Desparoux says:

yes you can but check if you see your own language in the video if not u ll have to use it as english or look near your country stock roms

  18. Heberto says:

Hi Max, if I have ics 4.0.3 official running without rooting, how can I install this version using odin mobile? sorry for my english and for the dumb question but im newbie in this, thanks

  19. Luckidrag says:

URGENT! Everyone thinking to upgrade should read this.

Not sure how serious this situation is. My upgrade is successful. But, when I press Volume Up+Home+Power Button, I got the screen with the lying down Android with a red triangle. The screen says:

    Android System Recovery
    … as usual

    # MANUAL MODE #
    — Applying Multi-CSC…
    Applied the CSC-code: XEU
    Successfully applied Multi-CSC.

What shall I do now? I intended to wipe catch partition, and do the V4.0.4 backup. For the time being, my only choice is to ‘reboot system now’.

Max: Looking forward to hearing your suggestion.

  25. nicholas lee says:

Hi MAX….. thank’s for your excellent work!

btw, what custom ROMs have floating video player from Galaxy S3 like you said? thanks

    • Ashraf Ali says:

      Hello Nick,

This is the new feature in ICS 4.0.4. When you play a Video, you will get an option in right bottom of the screen which will enable you to pop-out the video to home screen. Even when you are composing an SMS or updating a contact, you can still watch the video. FYI 🙂

    • Max says:

You can install any of the ROMs that have GS3 TouchWiz UX launcher, then you have to install the floating player apk file. ROMs like Criskelo, RocketROM, KingsDroid.

  26. Phoenix56317 says:

    Max,

As always, Outstanding instructions of this, I wished more people would learn to READ and THINK before they commit themselves to flashing anything on their so-called smartphones ! Makes you wonder why there called smartphones to begin with, huh ?

Max, I know and understand your doing a GREAT service to those who seek enlightenment via their new shiny cell phone but I feel sorry for you sometimes because you have to put up with people who FAIL, themselves because they forgot to read and apply the problem solving steps we all learned in our lives.

No matter what, Max, don’t stop doing what your doing, am sure everyone greatly appreciates it, even the NOOBS !

  27. RajaGanesh says:

  29. noobster says:

can I just used the steps mentioned? or I need to flash it with the abyss kernel first.

omg, I’m even confused right now!!!

  30. pdees says:

I upgraded to version 4.0.4 and now i am no longer rooted. Can i just follow our root instructions to do it again?or is the process different on the new version. I used your root method before and it worked great. Please advise thank you.

  31. Fernando says:

hello max and hello to all the users present..i installed mobile odin and the flasher as the video said…now i only have one question…..
…do you think this official 4.0.4 update is better than rocket romv7? cause im running rocket rom and its pretty awsome no lag at all or forced reboots like kingdroid..fair battery drain…fast. Actually a great rom is it worth the change…thanks for the video! Thanks for the help 🙂

    • Max says:

Well there are some stuff that are great but you can wait couple days as custom ROMs will have all of the new features, that’s my advice, just wait if you are doing fine on custom ROM. Cheers!

  32. Amey says:

Max, please tell me i did;t just instalet a ics kernel, and now my ddevice will brick anytime?

    • Max says:

No bricking only happens if you are on ICS and Do a Factory Reset without using Abyss first (or other safe kernels).

  39. cata says:

i’m on ics and i did factory reset and i have no problems, can i still instal abyss? or it’s to late? Thanks a lot.

    • Max says:

You should have done it before doing factory reset, next time, that’s how people have been bricking their phones.

  40. cata says:

so you are saying it’s not too late?i can still save it?

  41. cata says:

    Thx a lot man.!!

  42. cata says:

One last questions :-s and i’m soryy but i’m a novice 😛 to instal abyss i need to rooted, and this won;t brick it no ? Thx and soryy again.Have a great day

  43. gtr says:

    Max,

I noticed that you are coming from a custom rom and thus a custom kernel also. Coming from a stock ICS 4.0.3 rooted with stock kernel. Is it really safe to use mobile odin to flash LRG while on stock 4.0.3 kernel?

  44. shaun says:

i have had 0 problem with my note. i have flashed criskelos, kindroid, etc etc. i love custom roms.

  46. markikswabe says:

HI Max, Just curious, why would you need “Mobile Odin Flash Kernel for GT-N7000” If you already have Mobile Odin? Is this additional functionality for mobil odin? I have Mobile Odin Pro btw. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks

    • Max says:

If you have mobile odin pro you don’t need it as it will download automatically. 🙂

      • markikswabe says:

Hi Max, Thanks to your reply. Does doing this method would do a clean install? Also, can I change the CSC file before flashing but the CSC file is coming from 4.0.3. Thanks

  56. Avatar says:

    Hi Max,

First of all great site and I really like your to the point instruction style.

I followed the instructions on your rooting page to root and then try CM10 preview 3 for a while. Later, I followed the instructions on this page exactly to unroot and revert to ICS 4.0.4. It completed but the phone gets stuck on the glowing Samsung logo.

Correct me if I’m wrong, I guess it needs a wipe of data/cache partitions, but now since its running stock recovery, how do I do this safely without risking bricking the phone? Kindly advise how to proceed. Many thanks.

PS. This is my wife’s phone and I’m in serious trouble here 😉

    • Max says:

Try doing a factory reset with Abyss kernel before unrooting, that should be very safe. Make sure you reboot into recovery after flashing Abyss.

  57. sami says:

    Hi Max,

Can U tell what rom R U on before installing the 4.0.4 ?

  58. nii says:

Is this ICS 4.0.4 the exact same software running on the T-mobile SGH T-879 version of the galaxy note?
    What are the possible differences?

  59. nii says:

i ask this because i messed up somewhere. I rooted my T-mobile galaxy and was just installing some apps. I restarted phone and that was my end. It boots up to the SAMSUNG GALAXY LOGO screen and goes black again.
Wondering if I can flash this ICS 4.0.4 for N7000 on it since I am still able to go to the download mode and CMW mode for my phone to be working again?

  60. SK says:

This might be a stupid question.

I used this exact method to supposedly unroot my phone however after using a root checker, I found that I still have root privileges. I have tried deleting the su file and the superuser.apk file to no avail. Please help me.

    • Tanzim says:

@Mustafa. I faced the same problem once. i couldn’t enter into recovery mode and flash was stuck in Nand write as you mentioned in another post. i’m telling you how i fixed it.I suspect you already soft bricked your phone,So you will need pits-N7000_16GB/pits-N7000_32GB for PIT of Odin, just google with file name. at first reinstall samsung USB drivers,if you don’t have, google it.then don’t connect your phone.start odin, set all the files b4 connecting.then connect your phone but you will see some drivers will start installing,CANCEL THE INSTALLATION IMMEDIATELY, installation of the driver will make you stuck again.if you fail to cancel ,repeat the process again.Hopely you can flash without any issue. You may loose some of your internal storage and may have to restart your phones few times to start properly.Best of luck.
