For this week’s AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717 ROM of the Week, check out latest version of BeanStalk ROM.

Based on latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat, BeanStalk ROM brings you the latest Android performance improvements along with all of the cool customization/features you are used to.    With Android 4.4.4 KitKat, Google has improved upon Android OS drastically, I have personally seen improvements of over 20-30% on many of my older Android devices.

Now, the performance improvements weren’t as drastic on SGH-i717 unfortunately but you will still get some and you can raise the minimum CPU values to get it running a lot more zippy even without any overclocking.

With the latest BeanStalk ROM, you will be able to experience the latest Google Camera, Shake events (launch apps when you shake your phone), and some more.

Overall, this is probably the fastest ROM out “right now” so definitely give it a test drive over the week(end) and do let me know what you think!

  1. EZ says:

My only question with the beanstalk ROMs is whether the camera works consistently?

I have had too many issues in the past where the camera failed and I lost pictures that I took with it…

    Thanks in advanced…

  2. raphael says:

Anyone experiencing issues with Bluetooth with this ROM? I am having issues playing music with either Apollo or google play after pairing successfully with my Bluetooth speakers – I get an error while trying to play music.

    • Maggie says:

Yes. I used to have no problem running sound through a brick, now, it’s very difficult to set up, if you can get it to connect all all. There are no screen notifications of a connection like before, and I just find myself not using it much. I have used it with the TV and have not have the same issues I’ve had with the brick. It does work, it’s just…temperamental and not what I’d call dependable on demand.

  3. Won Lee says:

Any method for re-partitioning to utilize this ROM with apps. The original partition on i717 2GB internal storage, 10GB internal storage(treated as SD CARD). Is there any way to combine these like newer Galaxy Models?

    • Maggie says:

Yes, I’ve done with online tutorials. My phone is running so much faster and I can download so many more apps now. I started with a new card with double the write speed and can’t believe the difference that made as well.

  4. jay will says:

I cannnot install the Rom on Note i717. I installed 4.4.3 months ago with no problem. When I am flashing i get the error in part saying something about I have the wrong radio. Can someone help?

  5. Steve says:

I have installed Beanstalk 4.4.255 20140307 and find it very stable. Except for the flaky Bluetooth and I understand that comes from the CM 10.3 on which Beanstalk is using.
I downloaded this Beanstalk 4.4.4 and found a bug with the keyboard that blanks out the area I am trying to enter text so I cannot see what I entered until after I am done with the keyboard. It does that on all apps where I need to enter text. I reinstalled after format/wipe /system, then re-installed. Still had the same problem. I went back to Beanstalk 4.4.255.

    • Steve says:

Apparently this keyboard bug only shows up after installing some additional apps like Kindle, Olive Office, Jorte calendar, etc. This is my “daily driver” phone, so I use it all the time and prefer some of those apps. I truly use it as a tablet and phone,

    • Maggie says:

I use Google keyboard with no issue, and prefer the swype on it.

  6. odilio M says:

love this rom but it has some critical issues that need to be fixed, wifi and bluetooth fail, connection is lost and can not be founf even if beside router, the screen flickers but i fixed that with aroma patch. it would be nice if the blue tooth and wifi get fix.

    thank you, awesome work
    note i717

    • Steve says:

The aforementioned Polluti0ns_rom_patch_v2 fixed the flickering and stabilized the bluetooth problems for me. Try it. Beanstalk 4.4.4 is now my “daily driver”.

Thanks to Max and Scott Hart.

      • Maggie says:

Seems to me that some collaboration in building the aroma patch into this ROM would have made it a lot more user friendly as I had a black box I on my screen that would hardly let me enter my google credentials to get past the setup pages. Once I changed the background to another photo, that helped (as stated in the OP of the ROM), but then I had a light underlayment of another status bar on the home screen and lock screen. I could not find a way to get rid of it, with or without the overlays checked. It didn’t show up on any other screen. This was the most stable for camera and video, so I wish I didn’t have those two pesky problems. Aroma didn’t fix it. I wiped everything for a clean wipe that most people say to wipe, (factory/cache/dalvic), but have read since about a system data or something like that in their list as well. May go back and try one more wipe/install. Otherwise, I just felt like it was cluttered under the hood, especially if you use another launcher to make icons smaller. Perhaps the build-in one does this–I was getting some indication you could change dpi in it reading something.

      • Bernie says:

Hi Steve. I’ve downloaded the ROM but installation failed in TeamWin recovery mode. What may be the reason? If possible, could you share the one you downloaded with me through dropbox?

        Thanks in advance

  7. Alex says:

Ifter I tried install n7000-CWM-KitKatCompatible , and after did factory reset tru boot loader, my phone died,
It shuts down and I could not turn it back on.
    I need help.

  8. mcavity says:

well I am in my second day using this rom, so far my biggest issue seems to be power usage.
Has anyone messed with the various power settings on this yet?

    • Maggie says:

Ugh. Sad to hear that. This video indicates you can work with performance settings to help battery life. Did you see that? Disable everything that needs to be disabled for battery life? That’s been a big complaint for me with 4.4.2 as well, however. Phone performance makes up for it but I’m burning through an extrended batter and 1-2 standard batteries a day.

  9. Dennis says:

I’ve been running Beanstalk v.4.4.4 for about 3 weeks. While it has been a bit of a bugger to configure on my i717 Note, I have to say it does run very well. Battery life is good now (use Battery Saver Mode under Beanstalk options, tweak til you’re satisfied). Use build.prop edits to get rid of screen flicker, don’t disable H/W acceleration. Use PollotiOn patch to install over clock kernel, I’m running very stable at 1890 MHz. Let me know if you need further help.

So here’s the problem I now have. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I can’t install updates. Yep, I get the Error, Insufficient memory BS. Yes, I’ve got plenty of space, cleaned caches, etc., new apps install fine, just can’t install updates that were previously updated. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks!

  10. Dennis says:

Here’s how I fixed screen flicker. Use a build.prop editor, don’t disable video H/W acceleration. Add the following block, find and delete any similar lines. Reboot!

    # Fix for KitKat screen flicker (by dennis)
    persist.hwc.mdpcomp.enable=false
    debug.composition.type=gpu
    dev.pm.dyn_samplingrate=1
    dev.pm.gpu_samplingrate=1

  11. Keith says:

Hello this rom works great on my Note i717. But do you have any plans to add Cast support to it?

    Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/hardware-hacking/chromecast/experimental-enable-mirroring-device-t2812193

Quote: Ask your device maintainer to add audio.r_submix.default to
the product_packages in the device.mk file.

  12. NLG says:

Looks like the screen flicker fix also removes the black boxes found when typing.

Still looking for a wifi fix if anyone finds one… no wifi = less fun

  13. Vision2099 says:

    ok to install gapps 4.4.4?

  14. Vision2099 says:

Is there a Tmobile radio for the i717 that works with this rom or any other kit kat versions? its asking for at least jellybean radio.

    • Max says:

You can use ICS modem, it could be that you are using a really older version of ICS modem.

      • ViSiON says:

What T-Mobile modem do you suggest? I have not got 4g since I’ve installed beanstalk. Yes I have one of the first modems released for T-Mobile from about a year a go.

        • Max says:

Oh maybe it’s not even modem related, did you check your APN? Not getting HSPA+?

          • ViSiON says:

APN seems fine. When I select something like LTE it usually just reverts to another setting automatically. Above my signal bars I get E, H, H+, and 3g. I never see 4g. Does h+ = 4g? (Any ideas about sounds issues listed below?). |
            \/

  15. ViSiON says:

Anyone else having problems with sound not working after a while of using this ROM? I’ve never experienced this but my system sounds as well as music does not play from my in phone speaker. If I revert to backup I get some sounds for a bit then lose it.

  16. SACHIN says:

When i try to flash this ROM thru TWRP, the installation fails, the message comes as ‘Error Flasing zip………. Updating Partition Details’/

Not able to intall any 4.4.4 ROM on my i717. please help.

  17. layaan says:

I installed beanstalk 4.4.278 and every thing is working fine. When i install beanstalk 4.4.4 and reboot the phone, after rebooting the screen started to flicker and i cant solve this problem and i went back to beanstalk 4.4.278.any one have any solution.

  18. Arnold says:

Hi all, I think its Max that provided the links for downloads, I was able to install both rom and gapps on my phone. Thank you. I haven’t installed flash or viperaudio yet but gonna do that next.
My only issue is that sometimes the screen flashes pretty fast when switching screen like from home to apps or another app back to home why? Also, when in a browers search or texting a text, the text your typing wont show what your typing. I’ve tried looking at settings with display but can’t figure it out. Anyone else has this issue?
